Caribbean Carnival Postponed for 2021

Annual Atlanta DeKalb Caribbean Carnival Held in Stonecrest Memorial Day Weekend Postponed for 2021 // City Taking Measured Approach in Returning to Pre-Pandemic Activities

STONECREST, GA – (May 20, 2021) – With Memorial Day weekend marking the unofficial start to summer and many residents wondering when festivals and special events will return to Stonecrest, the City remains cautious in its approach to resuming and permitting these activities. Even as more people are vaccinated against COVID-19 and cases are trending downward countywide, the 30038 zip code still ranks near the top of reported cases according to the latest DeKalb County Board of Health report (as of May 17, 2021).

The popular Atlanta DeKalb Caribbean Carnival has generated a lot of interest from City residents wanting to know if it would still take place. Typically held during Memorial Day weekend at Stonecrest Mall, the event has attracted more than 20,000 participants in the past. Based on this interest and past turnout, City staff reached out to organizers of the Caribbean Carnival for a status. The organizers have confirmed to the City that the event originally scheduled for May 29 has been postponed. They are working to remove flyers and update online promotions to make people aware of the change. A new date has not been announced.

With a focus on public health as its guide, the City is developing a plan for resuming special events and festivals on City-owned and public property. Additionally, there have been recent proposals to Council on a phased approach to reopening Stonecrest Parks and the Browns Mill Aquatic Center. As plans are finalized and approved, updates will be shared through the City’s website, local media, and other channels.

We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we move safely towards pre-pandemic activities and continue to work together to be a world-class city.
